WHOOP! THERE IT IS!

I’m often asked “Where do you find your entertainment memorabilia?” Well, the answer is: In the unlikliest of places!

I was browsing in an antique mall today, where I came across a playbill from St. Louis’ venerable Empress Theatre. Almost every old-time star who I ever met, told me about appearing at this small playhouse at some point in their careers.

The Empress is no more—it’s literally a parking lot now—but I purchased the playbill as a bit of memorabilia from the theatre, and also because it was autographed by the show’s star, Debbie Reynolds. Ms. Reynolds was appearing in the March 1954 production of the play, Gigi.

Once home, I browsed through the program before i put it away for safekeeping. I enjoy looking at the old ads for local businesses that are around no-more. Its sort of a local time-capsule of a time gone by.

I noticed that the next production was a staging of the play Death Takes a Holiday, starring the great Vincent Price. “Wow,” I remarked to myself. “I bet that was an awesome show! I’d loved to have seen that!”

I finished browsing through the program, where I found a 5×7 piece of paper folded between one of the pages. I casually opened it up—and there it was—a vintage autograph of Vincent Price!

I can only guess that the owner of this program and autograph must have kept all their theatre memorabilia tucked together—-and there it stayed, hidden for years—until now!
