Spectrum Fantastic Art Live (SFAL) convened for its third edition this past weekend (May 9-11, 2014) at Bartle Hall in Kansas City, Missouri. SFAL bills itself as ‘The Art Fair With a Sense of Wonder.’

Well, that’s an apt description. If you sincerely appreciate art and all things creative, it is a pretty wonderful event!

The Spectrum convention venue afforded an appropriately-artistic view of the city's famous Kaufman Center for the Performing Arts. Doesn't it look like something right out of science-fiction?

To use the old cliche, it’s a show that had something for everyone. It’s for established and aspiring artists, and fans of art. If you have any interest in movies, gaming, comics, science fiction, fantasy or anything else, then you were in fan-heaven.

What you didn’t find were young ‘uns running around in costumes or packs of fanboys with stackss of comic books to be signed.  And while many of the artists and craftsmen had product to sell, I only saw one small dealer’s booth.

In my humble opinion, the best thing about this event is its low-key ambiance. You’re allowed  to interact with the attendees on a more personal basis than the standard comic convention. You can easily engage the artists and have an actual conversation.

I think artist Mark Schultz said it best, “This show is how the early comic-book conventions used to be. This is for people who sincerely love art!” A simple statement, but very true!

Nice summary. This was my second year attending, and it was even better than last year. I loved seeing all the live sculpting, sketching and painting, and it is a great, informal atmosphere. Kind of takes the breath out of the fanboy in you.
