Golden Age comics fans know editor Shelly Mayer was front and center during the creation of DC comics’ most iconic characters. Mayer mid-wifed such super-stars as The Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, and many, many others.

Many may just know him from the classic ‘Scribbly’ and ‘Sugar and Spike’ strips he became famous for in his own right. They were solely his creations and have endured the test of time and still revered today.

Several months ago I purchased a sheaf of papers from the Mayer estate. The seller said they were contained in a DC Comics envelope with Mayer’s address on the outside. Part of the material is what was apparently a proposed ‘Batman’ story that Shelly prepared an outline and some rough layouts.

There’s no date on any of the pages, but i would hazard to guess they are from the early to mid-70s.

Here they are—submitted for your perusal! What a tantalizing mystery! Enjoy!

Batman c) DC Comics

From what I can ascertain from the fragments here, this is definitely a whimsical tale about a campy villain known as ‘The Gambler’ and a young girl with magical powers known as ‘Marvelous Miranda.’ On the image above, the name of artist Ramona Fradon is spelled backwards on the left of the page. Could this have been a collaboration of the two?
