Who out there remembers that venerable old institution, The Science-Fiction Book Club? Based on the business model of that other venerable old institution, The Book-of-the-Month-Club, the SFBC would automatically mail you monthly SF tomes, unless you chose to opt out.

SFBC 1

I joined-up back in the late 1960s. It seemed like a sweetheart deal! You received a generous amount of free SF books for joining, with the promise of buying a prescribed number of volumes during the term of your membership.

Now to put it in perspective, back in those Jurassic Park days, there was relatively little SF available for the rabid fan. You could easily keep up with all the magazines and books published each month and scarcely break a sweat.  Any way you could increase your influx of fantastic literature was a Godsend!

Being the irresponsible teen that I was, I gladly signed up for the free books and then dutifully forgot to send in the monthly cards declining that month’s selection, or submitted them too late. It cost me a lot of money that I really didn’t have….but it also exposed me to authors that I probably would not have otherwise sampled.

The SFBC endures, with a lot more bells and whistles than it did almost 50 years ago during my membership. With the avalanche of post-Star Wars SF publications, it continues to thrive.

These accompanying illustrations come from a vintage 1954 membership solicitation kit. I was at an estate sale and purchased a vintage non-SF book. Flipping through the pages I discovered this advertisement for the SFBC, complete with charming ad art. Enjoy!
