He was the original Scarface.

Paul Muni was born Sept. 22, 1895, in Lemberg, Austria. After moving to New York, Muni became active in Yiddish theater, a road which ultimately lead him to Broadway.

Signed by Warner Brothers in the early 1930s, he became one of the studios top players. He appeared in one hit after the other: Scarface, I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang, The Good Earth, Juarez, and The Story of Louis Pasteur to name just a few.

His star waned during the war years. Muni returned to the New York stage to great success, and appeared in the occassional film.  His final movie, The Last Angry Man, was one of his best.

Throughout the 1960s the actor suffered from blindness and failing health. He died on August 25, 1967.
