PART DEUX — PLANET COMICON, KANSAS CITY

Please don't ask me what the paper sack over the head of the Fantastic Four member means. I have no clue!

Yesterday, as you may recall, we recapped Planet Comicon Kansas City in a celebration of words and exclusive photos. But there was just too much great info and pix to cram into only one post.

Conventions today have basically morphed into pop-culture extravaganzas. The lines between comics-filmed entertainment-merchandising have blurred into a whole.

Planet Comicon always stays close to it’s comic-book roots. KC/St. Louis/Chicago is a triangle of comics talent, and there were representatives from this creative area, as well as stars from the national scene.

Novelist Greg Ruck (l) and Eisner Award-winning artist Rick Burchett were on hand to meet and greet their many fans. The due celebtrated the release of their Kickstarter-funded 'Lady Sabre' collection.

Writer Rick Burchett from St. Louis and nationally-known novelist Greg Rucka came to welcome their many fans. The talented duo has worked on a variety of high-profile projects. Most recently is the realization of their ‘Lady Sabre’ graphic novel, financed through Kickstarter. This volume is the first in a multi-chapter series featuring their creator-owned character.

‘The Walking Dead’ fans were pleased to meet and greet co-creator Tony Moore. TWD started out as a multi-chapter graphic novel before transferring to one of the most popular shows on cable TV. Moore not only continues the graphic series, but also consults the production of the small screen series.

Comics writer-turned-novelist Alex Grecian shows off copies of his 'Scotland Yark' Victorian mystery stories. The author has completed #3 and at work on the fourth installment.

Comic book writer turned novelist Alex Grecian promoted his historical novels featuring detectives of the Victorian-set Scotland Yard Murder Squad novels,’ The Yard’ and ‘The Black Country.’ They are popular among comics fans and mystery buffs alike and are favorites of this writer. Grecian told us that he’s finished his third book in the series and well into the fourth. We can’t wait!

British writer James Robinson, scribe of 'Starman' and other high-profile projects, pauses to sign another book for a fan.

Also on hand was artist Tim Sale. Tim won an Eisner Award for his work on many popular comics and mini-series. His work was used on the 'Heroes' TV series, that's slated for a return next year.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a site where there are more creative people gathered in one place. Many are fans whose love and passion for all things comics and sci-fi/fantasy have led them to pursue this as a career. One of the most successful is St. Louis businessman Lorenzo Lizana, whose Lion Forge Comics is very popular among current readers.

Lorenzo toiled as an artist until he decided to become an entrepreneur. He now publishes a series of books featuring his company’s unique characters.  He’s retained a staff of artists and writers to produce comics under the Lion Forge imprint. They also licensed some popular kid-friendly TV series such as ‘Punky Brewster’ and ‘Saved by the Bell’.

Also on hand was Kansas City native and ex-Marine Rudy Reyes.  Reyes is one of the participants in the National Geographic channel’s ‘Ultimate Survival: Alaska’. The reality series chronicles the struggle of a group of survivalists dropped into the Arctic wasteland and how they cope with the extreme conditions.

You can see how relieved Reyes looks that he escaped a good ol’ Missouri whoopin’! BTW, Rudy was acting as Good Will Ambassador for the venerable KC institution, Clint’s Comics.

Some fans resent the influx of Cosplayers and a focus on media celebs hawking their autographs. Like it or not, they do bring people into a show. But you have to admit, the level of costuming gets more and more professional every year.

You can take all the money in the world and pour it into a costume. But if it lacks the pure passion true fans have for a particular character, then it will never work. If Blogmeister Sam was 20 years younger and 15 pounds lighter, he’d be right in the mix!

As the proceedings wound down. I overheard several fans saying their goodbyes and remarking how they were looking forward to next year.

So am I!
