Oswald George Nelson was born March 20, 1906 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Ozzie Nelson began his career studying law, but soon formed a dance band in the 1920s that became hugely popular.

He took on Harriet Hilliard as a featured vocalist in 1932. They fell in love and married in 1935. And the rest, as they say, was history.

Harriett had her own film career, but the duo appeared in movies together throughout the late 30s and into the 40s.

They segued into radio with their own hugely popular sitcom. They incorporated their real-life sons, David and Ricky, and the show’s popularity really took off.

Television was the natural progression, and their family antics lasted for 14 years on the small screen. He became the template for all TV fathers.

Ozzie always portrayed the clueless, bumbling dad, but he was anything but that! He was a master businessman, guiding the Nelson franchise through a variety of lucrative incarnations.

He was quick to recognize the teen-idol status of son Ricky and exploited it masterfully.

Ozzie wrote a popular autobiography that really gave an insightful look into the workings of the Nelson empire.

Ozzie Nelson passed away on June 3, 1975.
