ORSON WELLES

Many contemporary fans will be surprised by this dashing portrait of Orson Welles. Most remember him as the overweight, bearded bufoon who cavorted on cheesy TV variety shows in the 1970s and was a pitchman for low-grade wine.

But as even the most casual film fan knows, Welles was considered a genius by the media in the late 1930s and throughout the 40s. His classic movie, Citizen Kane, is regarded by many as the best film ever made. That fact is debatable, but it gave the director/writer/actor/producer  a pedigree that stayed with him forever.

Plus, he was married for a while to the screen’s most desirable woman, Rita Hayworth. Hollywood wags christened their union as ‘The Beauty and The Brain’. That by itself is a claim to fame!

Like anyone in show business, Wells had his ups and downs. He fell victim to his own excesses and ended up a sort of parriah in Hollywood. He was considered to volatile and uncontrollable to be trusted with another film, due to his disregard for budgets and schedules.

Welles above all, was a tremendous, forceful personality. He actrively cultivated his bigger-than-life reputation. In his later years reveled in living up to his own hype. We need more dynamic showmen like him!
