George Hosato Takei aka Hkaru Sulu, helmsman of the USS Enterprise spacecraft was born on this day, April 20, 1937. The talented Mr. Takei is an actor, director, author, and activist.

After starring in the original Star Trek series in the 1960s, and reprising his role in six of the feature films, George did what all post-Trek actors do. He wrote a book, attended conventions and appeared at autograph shows.

Takei parlayed his celebrity status and social activism by becoming a proponent of Japanese-American rights. He also took the courageous step of coming out gay and marrying his longtime partner. He frequenly comments on LGBT issues on is popular Facebook page, which numbers a staggering 8 million-plus followers.

My own personal take-away about Mr. Takei is that he is an incredibly nice man. He appearance at a comicon in Chicago several years ago, where I had the pleasure of interacting with him. One evening during the week-end I purchased a copy of the latest TV Guide. It happened to be the issue that featured a pic of George from an upcoming episode of ‘Third Rock from the Sun’ that he was guesting on.

I purchased an extra copy and gave it to him, as he had not yet seen it. He was so grateful that i thought of him and thanked me profusely. It was just a small token for all the many years of pleasure he’s brought me—and still continues to do so.

Keep on keepin’ on, George Takei!
