POP CULTURE IN BLACK HISTORY

We’ve already spoken about a couple of classic Black entertainment icons. Now it’s time to spotlight a modern performer who is on his way to becoming a great star.

Friend of this blog, actor Trai Byers, has hit the stratosphere with his breakout role of Andre in the new hit TV drama, Empire. While audiences can’t get enough of the over-the-top Cookie monster, be sure to take notice of Trai’s nuanced performance as one of Luscious’ conniving sons.

His success on one of the most talked-about shows of the season is certainly no surprise to this blogger. I first became aware of Trai’s talent when I saw him in director Kevin Willmott’s great indie film, Destination: Planet Negro. I wrote at the time that he was going to be a big star, and my prediction has come true.

Trai appeared in another Willmott film, Jayhawkers. He’s recently appeared in the movie hit, Selma, as advocate James Forman. Upcoming is the feature film, Americons. Don’t touch that dial! We’re going to hear a lot more from this fantastic actor in the near future!
