BLACK HAIR-CARE….AND DOROTHY LAMOUR?

Everyone remembers actress Dorothy Lamour, who was famous for wearing a sarong and covorting with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in a number of their comedy films.

What is a surpising aspect of Dottie’s life is that in the late 50s, after her career had wound down, she lent her name and likeness to a chain of womens’ beauty parlors.

To celebrate Pop Culture in Black History Month, here’s an extremely rare historical photo of a group of African-American beauticians demonstrating techniques to an eager audience.

Remember, this was in a day when many ‘white’ beauty parlors and barbers would outrightly refuse to touch Black hair. Silly today, but was a deadly serious form of discrimination back in the day.
